Updating a LaTeX template for TRB

In transportation field, many people submit papers to the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting.  This conference/journal paper has a unique requirement that is to add word count on the title page.  TRB provides an Information for Authors, in which a Microsoft Word sample document for TRB paper is provided.  For people use LaTeX, however, there is no official template to be used.  Luckily, David Pritchard shared a LaTeX template several yaers ago.  Moreover, Gregory Macfarlane took David’s impressive work and made significant contribution to a newer version of LaTeX template, which enables users to use R, LaTeX, and Sweave for dynamic documentation (great contribution!).

As I was playing with Greg’s template, I decided to make minor tweaks and change some formatting to make it closer to the instructions given in the Information for Authors (based on my personal interpretation of this document).  Here are some main things I did:

  1. Added some automatic features:
    • Total word count:  Here, total word count = word count + figure count * 250 + table count * 250.  Note that 250 is the equivalent number of words per figure/table.  I also implemented a similar feature in Microsoft Word, and made a tutorial about how to do that here.
    • Submission Date:  Made the submission date automatically show today’s date
  2. Minor formatting: To make the LaTeX version closer to the instructions, I made some minor changes to the previous version and they are listed below:
    • Remove the vertical spacing between bibliographic entries:  In the MS Word template, the bibliography’s format is single spacing with no additional spacing before and after each reference.  However, in previous versions of the LaTeX, there was additional spacing.  It has been corrected in this version.
    • Made the title of the paper all uppercase
    • Print the bibliography in a new page

There are still some tweaks to be done to make the LaTeX template even closer to the Word sample document, but I think the trb_template of current version looks good enough.  If you are interested in creating your TRB paper in LaTeX and if you want to create your document with dynamic R and Sweave features, you can download the template as a .zip file here: TRB_LaTeX_template.

I also shared this template on the website of the Institute of Transportation Engineers at Georgia Tech (ITE@GT), if you are interested in learning more about ITE@GT, you may find out more about us, along with some interesting articles, there.  Enjoy!
